Parent Giving: Meet Hui Su & Chengxing Zhai
Hui Su and Chengxing Zhai, both former JPL scientists who are now faculty members at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, are the proud parents of two Caltech graduates and leadership-level supporters of the Caltech Fund.
Hui and Chengxing share a passion for Caltech—it's a place where both of their children flourished due to the collaborative environment, unparalleled opportunities, and strong community bonds. The small, tight-knit community fostered a sense of belonging and camaraderie. Their daughter, initially unsure about fitting in, found lasting friendships and leadership opportunities that greatly enriched her experience. Their son, who had always dreamed of attending Caltech, thrived in the collaborative environment where students supported each other while maintaining academic integrity.
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) program provided hands-on research opportunities, and lunch presentation lectures offered intellectual stimulation. These programs were invaluable, allowing their children to engage deeply with their fields of interest.
Their dedication to supporting the Caltech Fund stems from their belief in giving back to an institution that significantly shaped their children's futures, fostering both academic and personal growth. Caltech provided an environment where their children could excel in academics, develop leadership skills, and form lifelong friendships. The family remains deeply connected to Caltech, continuing to participate in alumni events and cherishing their ongoing relationship with the community. They understand the importance of providing the Institute with unrestricted funds year after year, as they hope it allows the Institute to allow other families the opportunity to enjoy the same experience as they have.
