James (Jim) Stana (MS '74, mechanical engineering) began his journey to Caltech began at a young age with an interest in all things mechanical paired with a bit of inspiration from his older brothers, who were both engineers.
Despite some preliminary nerves about being accepted into his mechanical engineering master's program at Caltech, Jim applied and was awarded a fellowship to study, which allowed him the financial means to attend the Institute. The transition from his undergraduate studies to Caltech was eye-opening for him, as he quickly realized he was surrounded by some of the brightest minds in the world.
At Caltech, Jim was captivated by earthquake engineering and thermal dynamics. He fondly recalls the impact of his professor, Nametk Sabbagh, who brought practical problems into the classroom, making learning deeply engaging and memorable.
Jim attributes his academic successes to both hard work and the generosity of others who funded scholarships and fellowships. This is why he is committed to giving back. Jim feels responsible for ensuring that others have access to the same opportunities he had.
Jim's dedication to philanthropy extends beyond Caltech, and he continues to support various charities that align with his values. His approach to giving is thoughtful and strategic, often seeking ways to maximize his contributions through matching programs.
By giving to the Caltech Fund, Jim hopes to contribute to the ongoing success and innovation at Caltech, ensuring that future generations of students and researchers have the resources they need to excel.
You, too, can support the Institute as Jim has by making an online gift today.
